Role Overview

The Investment Director sits at the heart of a wealth management firm’s front office, carrying responsibility for a significant book of HNW and UHNW client relationships, the performance and consistency of bespoke investment portfolios, and the development of more junior investment professionals within the team.

This is a role that demands genuine breadth. You are expected to lead client relationships at the most complex end of the spectrum – multigenerational family wealth, trustees, sophisticated private investors – whilst simultaneously owning the investment quality and risk management of the portfolios you oversee. Many Investment Directors also carry business development responsibility, whether through referral networks, intermediary partnerships or proactive client acquisition.

At firms where an Investment Director holds a management remit, they will typically oversee a team of Investment Managers and Analysts, setting the tone for investment philosophy, client service standards, and team culture. In this respect, the role sits somewhere between practitioner and leader – and the best Investment Directors are genuinely both.

What This Role Involves

Day-to-day, an Investment Director's responsibilities will vary depending on the structure and culture of the firm, but typically span the following areas:

  • 01 Managing a substantial book of HNW and UHNW client relationships, acting as the primary point of contact and trusted adviser across complex financial situations.
  • 02 Maintaining full discretionary investment management responsibility for bespoke, multi-asset client portfolios in line with individual mandates, risk profiles and objectives.
  • 03 Leading or contributing to the firm's investment process, attending committee meetings and articulating views on asset allocation, manager selection and market positioning.
  • 04 Generating new business through referral networks, professional intermediaries (solicitors, accountants, IFAs) and direct client acquisition.
  • 05 Mentoring and developing junior investment professionals including Investment Managers, Analysts and Graduate Trainees.
  • 06 Overseeing compliance with FCA regulatory requirements and internal risk frameworks, ensuring all client activity meets suitability standards.
  • 07 Preparing and presenting investment reviews, portfolio commentary and market outlooks to clients in a clear and compelling manner.
  • 08 Collaborating with Financial Planning colleagues to deliver integrated wealth management solutions for complex client needs.

Required Experience & Skills

Discretionary Portfolio Management

Demonstrable track record managing bespoke, multi-asset client portfolios within a discretionary mandate across a range of risk profiles.

HNW / UHNW Client Relationship Management

Proven ability to manage and retain complex, long-standing client relationships at the high net worth and ultra-high net worth end of the market.

Investment Process & Asset Allocation

Active contribution to an investment committee or house view process, with strong views on multi-asset allocation, manager selection and risk management.

Business Development

Track record of generating new client assets through referral networks, professional connections or direct acquisition.

Team Leadership & Mentoring

Experience managing, mentoring or developing junior investment professionals within a front office team environment.

Client Communication

Ability to translate complex investment ideas into clear, compelling written and verbal communication for sophisticated private clients.

Regulatory Awareness

Strong working knowledge of FCA conduct rules, suitability requirements and MiFID II obligations as they apply to discretionary investment management.

  • CFA Charter (CFA Institute) Required
  • IMC (Investment Management Certificate) Required
  • FCA Approved Person status (CF30 / Consumer Duty) Required

  • Degree-level education or equivalent professional experience Required
